Most Recent Question: Not Taken Seriously at Work
Dear Deborah:
I have just started a new job, but I feel I am not taken seriously. I think this is because I am young and inexperienced but at the same time I stay late after work. Sometimes everbody else leaves the office and I am left with loads of work and no one to help me. What should I do?
Thank you,
Aileen
Aileen,
Are you taking YOU seriously? Sometimes when we believe others are not doing something, it is not them, but the perception we have about ourselves.
You say you are young and inexperienced. This maybe true or it could be false. You already have the skills to do the job or they would not have hired you. It sounds like what's missing is some updates to make you better at your job. What can you do to get better at what you do? Are there classes you take? Co-workers you can learn from? Advice from your boss? What skills and abilities do you have that you can build on so you are not starting from scratch?
If you need help, request it. Lay out what you have been doing and what you need to do your job successfully. And, work on how you feel about yourself.
This will give you the power and confidence to ask for what you want.
Deborah
