Editor's Notes

Happy Spring! Although the first days of Spring brought snow to us here in Connecticut, we’re having spring-like weather today. I hope wherever you are that you’ll always make at least some time to relax and enjoy yourself.

Which brings us to the lead article in this newsletter: Are You A Good Juggler? As a small business owner, my professional life often overflows into my downtime, which means I find myself discussing new ideas for career-intelligence.com over Sunday brunch. Not always a good thing.

Living in this 24/7 world makes balancing the many components of our lives difficult. If not downright impossible. So I decided to reach out to a few work/life balance professionals with the goal of getting some advice for you. And some for me too! In Are You A Good Juggler? How to balance work, family and friends (Part 1) you’ll find some thought-provoking comments and some concrete advice for setting boundaries.

In the last two issues, I’ve mentioned that we’ll be making a few changes to career-intelligence.com. Right now, we’re in the process of putting up a Jobs Board. It's currently being beta tested and should be ready by mid-April. If you’d like information on posting to our job board please let us know by filling out this contact form.

Also, in April we are starting a Customer Appreciation program. If you’ve purchased a career assessment over the past three years you’ll be receiving an email from me shortly. In the email, I’ll give you a discount code to use on a future assessment purchase for you or a friend.

The results of our March poll - Would you rather work for a male or female boss? – are in. Of our respondents 39.47% say they prefer a male boss, 10.53% prefer a female and 50% say it doesn’t matter. Please take a minute to answer our April Fun Fashion Poll when you visit the website. We’ll give you the results in an upcoming newsletter.

Please forward this newsletter and don’t forget to follow us on Twitter and like us on Facebook!

Thanks again for your continued interest in career-intelligence.com. I hope you'll enjoy this issue as much as we enjoyed putting it together. As always, please contact me directly at arichmond@career-intelligence.com with any thoughts, comments or suggestions.

It's your life, make the most of it :)

How to balance work, family and friends

By Annette Richmond

How’s your juggling act? You know, making sure that everything keeps running smoothly. And none of the components of your life end up like an egg when it hits the floor.

Whatever you’re doing, working for a corporation or running a small business, finding a way to balance the personal and professional parts of your life can be daunting. Living in a world where we’re able, and expected, to be connected 24/7 makes it even more difficult. Add in the stress that comes from trying to do it all can put you over the top.

So what are we to do?

Looking for a little perspective and guidance, I contacted several work/life balance professionals. What I got back were thoughtful comments and some concrete advice. Here are their responses to my first two of four questions.

Don’t forget to connect face-to-face

By Carole Martin

It appears, from studies conducted over the past few years that women are more actively involved in using Social Media Networking then men. They have more Facebook and Twitter pages, and they are blogging away!

Not a big surprise - women have been “natural-born-networkers” since the beginning of time and when social media became available it was an opportunity to connect – not only in the local community but to reach out to a global network of women (and men, of course).

With women running 70% of home-based businesses out of the 34.3 million home offices in the U.S. that is talking about a lot of outreach and power. So, it may have been the men who started social media networking, but it is the women who are using it to their fullest advantage.
