Editor's Notes

Happy Holidays! Wow I can’t believe that Hanukkah’s over and Christmas is next week! Every day our mailbox is filled with holiday cards. It’s so much fun to hear from old friends and see how much their kids have grown. I hope that you’ll have the chance to enjoy some time relaxing with family and friends over the next few weeks.

Just in case you missed any of our holiday-focused articles we decided to make this issue a Holiday Wrap Up. It’s filled with tips for getting through the ubiquitous company holiday party - I’m going to two this week - and making the most of your networking opportunities. You’ll also find tips from six stress-management experts on how to handle the inevitable stress that comes with hustle and bustle of the season.

Next year, you’ll be hearing from us a little more often. In addition to the two regular newsletters with a mix of articles, we’ll be sending out one issue a month that focuses on a particular topic. Kind of like this one. Some of the subjects include interviewing skills, personal branding, resume writing, communication and more. I hope you’ll find the subjects we’ve chosen helpful in managing your career.

Our holiday poll is still running. So far, the majority of respondents – 71.43% - are not looking forward to their office festivities. When you visit the website please take a moment to add your response. We'll publish the results in an upcoming newsletter.

Thanks again for your continued interest in career-intelligence.com. I hope you'll enjoy this issue as much as we enjoyed putting it together. As always, please contact me directly at arichmond@career-intelligence.com with any thoughts, comments or suggestions.

It's your life, make the most of it :)

How to make a good impression at the office party

By Annette Richmond

November is here, which means the office holiday party is just around the corner. Due to the current economic climate, for many companies the swanky evening bash has given way to more modest afternoon festivities. In some cases it’s a pot luck lunch held at the office.

While each setting brings somewhat different challenges the goal is always the same: look your best and make a good impression. Particularly on the boss.

To help you make the most of your holiday gathering this year, we picked the brains of several experts including image consultants, etiquette specialists and even a fashion stylist.

Many of us look forward to the holiday season all year. I know I do. We think about spending time with friends and family. Decorating our homes and shopping for the perfect gift. And as a bonus we get extra days away from the office. It’s supposed to be the most wonderful time of the year.

Unfortunately, all this activity adds to the daily stress in our lives. But there are things you can do to minimize the effect this stress has on you. I asked six experts to share their advice on how to make your holiday season a little more merry and bright. Just the way you want it to be. Following, are their responses.

How to mix and mingle your way through the holiday season

We all know that networking is one of our most powerful business tools. One of the things most of us forget is to continually nurture our network even when things are going well. The holiday season is a great time to catch up with old friends and make new ones.

Why are the holidays so great? When do you have a better opportunity to rekindle relationships? This is the perfect time of the year to get back in touch with people just to find out how they are doing. Make sure you take the opportunity to reconnect with friends and family.

Business Organizations

Nearly all organizations have some sort of holiday get-together in December. Whether it’s cocktails and hors d’oeuvre‘s or a sit-down dinner. In many cases theses events do not include a speaker which means more time to mix and mingle.

The fact that most people are felling festive and, consequently, more friendly is an added benefit. And the holidays provide a conversation topic that everyone can relate to. Just don’t make your questions too personal. Not everyone is thrilled to be going home for the holidays.
