Editor's Notes

Greetings! Those of you who work with technology know how great it can be, when it works. The operative phrase being “ when it works.” Last week our hosting company had a server crash, which resulted in several problems and set backs for us.

Since some of these set backs involve you, our readers, I’ll give you an update. On Friday, January 31st, our hosting company’s server crashed just as a visitor was signing up for this newsletter. As a result our database was corrupted. Since the hosting company does not backup files frequently, we have had to rebuild part of the subscriber list ourselves.

You may be wondering how this affects you. First, you’re getting this newsletter later than usual. Second, if you recently registered for the member’s only area you may have to reregister. Third, if you unsubscribed you may still be on the newsletter list. Finally, we also lost the January poll so there can be no comparison to last year’s numbers. For all this I apologize.

Now on to the good stuff. Although economy is still in a slump, corporate women are moving ahead. Men still are winning the wage race, but more women are getting the corner office (Corporate Women Gain Ground). As most of us know, self-confidence is one of the keys to success. But, even if your confidence is lagging, you can take steps to improve it (Stepping Stones to Self-Confidence).

Today, having a professional wardrobe is another essential. As companies are turning away from super casual, we all need to be careful of slipping into sloppy (Ins and Outs of Business Casual). For more tips on getting ahead don’t miss this issue’s Spotlight: Play Like A Man, Win Like A Woman.

One last thing, beginning in March The Career Intelligencer will be available in HTML only. AOL users with 6.0 or higher will be able to support HTML. Each issue will include a link to an online version for anyone who does not have HTML capabilities. We also will include a link in each newsletter for those readers who prefer to read The Career Intelligencer online.

We have been thinking about making this change for several months. While I would like to be able to continue both formats, as a relatively small company we need to use our resources where they will benefit most of our readers. Thanks for understanding.

Have a suggestion? Please send your comments to me at arichmond@career-intelligence.com.

And, if you know anyone else who'd enjoy reading The Career Intelligencer, please help us grow by passing it along.

It's your life, make the most of it :)

Playing By The Rules

Despite the fact that we've made it to the next millennium, in many ways business is still a man's world. And one of the biggest barriers we face are our male colleagues' perceptions.

So what can we do? According to Gail Evans one way to overcome these barriers is by learning to think like a man. No, that doesn't mean giving up our female advantage. It means understanding male perception. Learning the unwritten rules of business in order to even the playing field.

In Play Like A Man, Win Like A Woman Evans discusses the different ways men and women approach business situations. Using humor and candor, she explains the importance of adopting several innately male behaviors like team playing, risk taking and speaking up for what you want. Evans also notes several things that men can do at the office but women can't (like wearing sloppy attire).

Play Like A Man, Win Like A Woman is an engaging read, which illustrates how women sabotage themselves at the office and provides practical advice on how to succeed. If you've spent any time in the workforce, I think you'll identify with many of the book's examples. Just like I did.

(I read this book when it first came out. Now that it's available in paperback there's no reason to miss out.)

Are Your Employees Building Relationships?

Are your employees developing relationships or building barriers?

Do they think handing out business cards is networking?

Do they try to “sell” people at a networking event?

Do they follow up with uninvited pitches for products?

That’s not networking. That's negative networking.

Slowly but surely, corporate women are moving up the corporate ranks

By Annette Richmond, MA

By all accounts, our economy is going through a rough time. While the overall unemployment rate remained at 6 percent in December, the unemployment rate for adult women increased from 5 percent to 5.3 percent, according to the January report from the Bureau of Labor Statistics.

Still, there is some good news for women. Even as the economy continues to stagnate, women in corporate America are moving up the ranks. Currently, women represent 15.7 percent of corporate officers in America’s 500 largest companies up from 12.5 percent in 2000, and 8.7 percent in 1995, according to Catalyst’s 2002 Catalyst Census of Women Corporate Officers and Top Earners study. Three ways to build your self esteem

By Lois Raats, M.Ed.

Becoming more self-aware is an important first step on the road to self-esteem. But while you're noticing, you also need to accept what you're finding out about yourself.

People often have a lot of trouble with this step, because their thoughts and assumptions get in the way. Thoughts like "What's wrong with me?..." "I shouldn't be feeling this way..." "Why can't I get over this?" "It must be my fault..." stem from embedded assumptions like "I'm not worthwhile", "My feelings don't count"; "I have less right to take up space on planet Earth than s/he does"; "I have nothing important to contribute here". The Ins and Outs of Business Casual - Know the difference between casual and careless - By Diana Pemberton-Sikes

Business casual: What does it really mean? On a bright spring day several years ago, when the sky was bright blue, the tulips were in full bloom, and I was considering playing hooky as I walked into work, one of my accounting clerks sped by me in a flesh. Or was that flash? I still don't know. Read more
