Editor's Notes

Well, it's official. Punxsutawney Phil saw his shadow on Groundhog Day so we can expect six more weeks of winter. While I love the snow, I'm not sure I can take much more of the deep freeze we've had here in the Northeast.

At the end of a long day, wintry weather cold makes after-hours networking less appealing. Even in the dead of winter, however, we all need to get out and nurture our business relationships. Next time you're thinking of skipping an event give yourself a little pep talk (How To Network When You Want To Go Home).

If the idea of walking into a room full of strangers makes you cringe sign up for Connect With Confidence: Networking Tactics That Work! Join me from the comfort of your home or office - no need to worry about cold tootsies. (See details below)

Cold weather also makes keeping fit more of a struggle. While I still see men and women jogging down our slushy street, I can't imagine how they do it. But, you can stay fit in winter by being a little creative (Staying Active During Winter). Finally, if you're getting tired of your drab winter wardrobe creative doesn't stop with workouts. Try mixing things up to spice up your look (How To Spice Up Your Mid-Season Wardrobe!)

While many people think of the MBTI® as a tool for career changers, it's really much more than that. Taking the MBTI can teach you a lot about yourself and the people you work (and live) with. If you're interested in learning about Type theory pick up a copy of this issue's Spotlight: Type Talk At Work. I promise that you'll laugh while you're learning.

FYI, I wanted to share the results of our Romance Poll: 28% said you've dated someone at the office and would do it again; 23% wouldn't date a coworker again; 34% said you just don't think it's a good idea; and 15% are keeping your options open. Please take a minute to answer this month's Jobs & Economy Poll. I'll share the results in an upcoming issue.

Thanks for your continued support, please help us grow by fowarding The Career Intelligencer to your friends and colleagues.

Brrr! I'm counting the days till Spring. See you next month!

It's your life, make the most of it :)

Type Talk At Work

Do you know what makes your clients tick? What your boss bases her decisions on? How to communicate with colleagues? Myers-Briggs Type Theory can help you answer any or all of these questions.

Besides helping you understand yourself, Type theory can help you understand the people you work with. This understanding can help you communicate more effectively, resolve conflicts more quickly and recognize different time-management styles. In short, it can help you get the results you want.

That's where Type Talk At Work: How The 16 Personality Types Determine Your Success on the Job by Otto Kroeger and Janet M. Thusen comes in. It's specifically designed to help you recognize and appreciate similarities and differences in the workplace.

I've had the pleasure of hearing Kroeger speak. In addition to being one of the most respected authorities on Type theory, Kroeger is an entertaining and engaging speaker. Happily his knowledge and personality jump off the pages of all his books.

From cover to cover, Type Talk At Work focuses on the business world. Part 1 explains the basics of Type theory and the Typewatching process. Part 2 discusses how to apply this information to ten areas including problem solving, team building, time management, conflict resolution and sales. Part 3 provides in-depth profiles of each of the sixteen Types at work.

While there's no substitute for attending a Myers-Briggs team-building workshop, Type Talk At Work runs a close second. Filled with easy to recognize, often-humorous examples, Type Talk will help you understand why your clients and co-workers behave the way they do. And being able to understand each other is the first step to getting along.

Kroeger's other book Type Talk: The 16 Personality Types was reviewed previously.

We've all been there. It's easy to applaud the idea of networking. After all, everyone knows that people would rather do business with people they know. Read More

With the temperatures plummeting this time of year, many of us tend to hibernate inside our homes. But, hibernating is for bears. As humans it's important to stay active through all four seasons. Yet, a poll of 5,000 people found that 30 percent get no exercise at all during the Winter months.

Just because it is cold outside doesn't make it open season for an excuse not to exercise. There are multiple exercise options one can choose to participate in regardless of what the outdoor thermometer reads. Depending on your location and likes, you can choose to workout inside or outside.

All that is required for Winter-time workouts is some planning and employing all safety precautions. If you prefer to workout outside, keep the following tips in mind. Read More
