Greetings! Whether or not you’re a football fan, you’ll probably spend part of this weekend eating junk food at a Superbowl party. Even if you’re not a fan, take a few minutes to watch the game. Whatever the outcome, the game may provide a good conversation piece at your next networking event. Last week, I came across some Internet stats I’d like to share with you. Although women have outnumbered men online for about a year, men still dominate the web, according to a recent press release from Nielsen Net Ratings. The reason? Senior analyst Dawn Brozek says it’s because women still perform most of the household duties, giving men more leisure time to spend online. Thanks to everyone who answered our January poll. In case you’re curious about the results, the top four responses were Get into shape (33%), Start my own business (19%), Reduce stress in my life (15%),and Find a new job (13%). Congratulations to the 8% of you who are happy the way you are! Whether you’re already running your own business or looking to start one, you’ll find lots of great advice in this issue’s Spotlight, Soul Proprietor by Jane Pollak. If you’re looking for a new job, you’ll find some advice on salary negotiation in “Show Me the Money”. Don’t miss our What’s New section to find out if you’ll be next in the unemployment line and pick up some tips on stretching your interview wardrobe. Would you like to be featured on our home page? What To Expect When You Relocate By Nancy Morris Whether moving across the world or across the country, culture shock presents one of the most unique and complex transitions we can face in our lives. As well as relocating, sojourners are also faced with career, family, social and even language transitions. Culture shock is associated with stress, anxiety, confusion and feelings of being lost or out of place. It effects the way we think about ourselves and others, the way we interact and how we handle our emotions. Surprisingly to many, culture shock can show up even when relocating from one region to another within our own country - we assume ‘culture shock’ only occurs when moving to a completely different country. To coin a well-known phrase, when relocating, “expect the unexpected”. Read more |
