Greetings! Last week, I realized that business is back in full swing. My colleagues have come out of hibernation and my temporarily dormant calendar is filled with events. I hope you’re enjoying getting back to work as much as I am. As you may already know, employment declined again in December. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the overall unemployment rate has reached 5.8 percent. The unemployment rate for adult women increased to 5.2 percent. With more people out of work competition for good jobs is greater than ever. Even if you’re not looking for a job right now, it’s still a good idea to update your resume. As any coach or mentor will tell you, successful people are ready when opportunity knocks. But, before you get started, get some advice from our resume expert Amy Whitmer in The Perfect Resume. Consultants and small business owners can pick up some tips in Seven Steps to Getting Known, Guerrilla PR for the Entrepreneur by Jill Lubin. Part of the Guerrilla Marketing Series, Lubin’s book Guerrilla PR will be out later this year. Would you like to be featured on our home page? Share your success story with thousands of women from around the world? We’re always looking for first-person articles for our Women Only section. Send your idea or complete story to editor@career-intelligence.com. Please feel free to send your comments or suggestions to me at arichmond@career-intelligence.com. Let me know what you want to see here and I'll try to bring it to you. And, if you know anyone else who'd enjoy reading The Career Intelligencer, please pass it along. It's your life, make the most of it :)

Ten mistakes you don’t want to make By Amy C Whitmer There are four basic steps to obtaining the perfect job: write your resume; send your resume to prospective employers; go on job interviews; wait for job offers. Each step is crucial and cannot be skipped. With that in mind, you can see that writing your resume is the catalyst that gets the whole ball rolling. While a resume will not get you a job in and of itself, a great resume will get you the interviews you need in order to get the job. There are many characteristics that define a great resume. Perhaps a better place to start is by illustrating some common mistakes -- things NOT to do with your resume. Remember: a mediocre resume may mean no interviews or interviews only for jobs that don't meet your expectations. With that in mind, I've created a "Top Ten List of Resume Don'ts." Read More |
