Editor's Notes

Hello all! To those of you in the States, Happy 4th of July! I hope you will have an enjoyable, work-free holiday.

For most of us, summer brings thoughts of vacation. But our busy schedules rarely allow a week of relaxing at the shore or sightseeing in Europe. If you’re in this situation, Mixing Business With Pleasure will give you some tips on how to pack some vacation into your summer business trips. Our stress management expert, Frances Lylan Wolff, will give you some advice on how to relax when you do get away.

If you or someone you know is a recent college grad you’ll find some tips for making the transition from student to worker in Amy Ertel’s article. Amy is a Career Counselor with the Professional Development Office at the Tulane School of Law. In an upcoming issue, she will share some advice with those of you who are going “back to school.”

Beginning in August, some parts of the career-intelligence.com site will become Member’s Only areas. Don't worry, membership will be Free. However, you'll need to complete our membership form if you want to continue full-access to the site.

Please feel free to email your comments and suggestions to arichmond@career-intelligence.com. Let me know what you want to see here and I'll try to bring it to you. And, if you know anyone else who'd enjoy reading The Career Intelligencer, please pass it along.

It's your life, make the most of it  :)

A Helping Hand

You've probably heard of Catalyst, a non-profit organization that works for the advancement of workingwomen. I've used information from their research studies in several articles for this site. Now, Catalyst has a reference guide.

Be Your Own Mentor, by Sheila Wellington, president of Catalyst, is a must for every workingwoman's library. Wellington combines research from several Catalyst studies with insightful interviews. Throughout the book, women in top management positions share their experiences and expertise. Their candid remarks provide a peek inside the upper echelons of the corporate world.

While Be Your Own Mentor is designed as a step-by-step guide for advancing in the corporate environment, small business owners also will find lots of helpful advice. Chapters on creating your style, networking and two career marriages, for example, will help you get ahead whether you're a corporate climber or building a business of your own.

Wherever you are right now, Be Your Own Mentor is a great reference guide. It's a book you can turn to when you need information on topics such as: negotiating a raise; getting media attention; and the difference between Line Jobs and Staff Jobs. When you need advice, Wellington and Catalyst will be there.

How to pack vacation time into your business trips

When was the last time you took a weeklong vacation? For many of us, it’s been awhile. According to a recent Travel Poll by the Travel Industry Association of America (TIA), day trips and weekend getaways have increased in the last five years. Responses to the poll indicate that shorter trips have become more popular than longer vacations.

Our increasingly fast-paced society is credited with this change. Today singles and families are juggling busy work and social schedules, which makes it more and more difficult to carve out a full week or two for vacation. “But they feel vacations are an important par to their lives, so they compromise by taking multiple, shorter trips throughout the year,” says William S. Norman, president and CEO of the TIA.

One of the best ways to compromise is by turning a business trip (yours or theirs) into a mini-vacation. This probably is not feasible in all cases – there are some destinations that just don’t fit as getaway spots. But, by using your imagination you can cut your expenses and increase your vacation time. Read more
