Editor's Notes

Happy Summer! Heat wise that is. As I sit in my office, the mercury's steadily climbing. We on the East Coast are engulfed in a heat wave. Although it's only early June, the 90 degree temperature makes it feel like the dog days of summer, otherwise known as August.

While it's not yet summer, it is time to go to the dogs. In case you didn't know, Friday, June 20, 2008 is Take Your Dog to Work Day. Doing some research, I was surprised to find that nearly one in five employers now allow pets in the office. Is your company Pet Friendly? Would you like it to be? Answer this month's Pet Friendly poll - I'll publish the results next month.

I'm excited to tell you that our Ask the Experts section is back up and running. We have two new experts - Carole Martin, Interview Expert, and Bridgette Raes, Professional Image Expert, - joining us. Annemarie Cross, Resume Expert, is back to answer your questions as well. Watch for more new experts, in the coming months.

Also, we've added a new Career Resources section on career-intelligence.com. I've put together a group of programs that I believe will help you with your career goals. All are authors I've read and listened to myself. I hope you will find them helpful.

Thanks again for your continued interest in career-intelligence.com. I hope that you will enjoy what we put together in this issue.

As always, please contact me directly at arichmond@career-intelligence.com with any thoughts, comments or suggestions.

It's your life, make the most of it :)

National Study Shows that Pets Provide More Benefits to Companies than Management Classes

By Annette Richmond

Every time I get ready to leave my home, two sets of big, brown eyes plead to go with me. Unfortunately, my girls, Kaila and Holly, often have to be left at home. If you have four-legged kids of your own you know what I'm talking about.

Happily, I recently discovered that Friday, June 20, 2008 is Take Your Dog to Work Day. Sponsored by Pet Sitters International, Take Your Dog to Work Day was started nearly a decade ago in 1999. Who knew?

Prompted to do a little more research, I learned that increasing numbers of pets are joining their parents at the office. According to a 2006 survey by the American Pet Products Manufacturers Association* (APPMA) nearly one in five US companies allowed pets to accompany their owners to the office. And when that happens, it's not just the owners and animal companions that benefit. Read More

The best way to handle interviews after losing your job

By Carole Martin

If you’ve lost your job – or are going to lose your job – the last thing that you want to talk about is “why” you lost your job. In fact, the question

“Why did you leave your last job?” is one of the toughest questions to deal with – especially if you’ve been let go in one form or another.

If you are among the thousands of people who have been laid off in the last year and a half, you can simply state: “I was laid off.” Read More

Follow these tips and you can't go wrong

By Diana Pemberton-Sikes

Have an invitation to a wedding? Before you hit the mall or surf the web to find something to wear, take a little time to determine what's appropriate. It will make your quest that much easier.

So where do you start?

With the invitation.

One of the neat things about invitations is that they tell you so much more than just who, what, where, and when. If you take the time to "read between the lines," the invitation will provide you with valuable clues about the person who sent it and what you'll find once you get there. Read More
