Happy summer! Almost. Since summer means vacation, we’ve decided to publish
The Career Intelligencer only once per month in July and August. Don’t worry we’ll be back twice a month beginning in September. (Look for me on Block Island in August.)
This issue focuses on success. As you already know, the image of success is different for everyone. For some of us it’s getting to do work we love. And did I mention do it our way. Get one small business owner’s perspective in
The Meaning of Success by Dawn Rivers Baker. Read how another woman built her business by developing a speaking
career in Speaking Out by Joanna Parfitt.
If you missed Nafe’s 30 Years of Women @Work Conference I’ve shared some of the highlights in
Woman to Woman. New owner Carol Evans is shaking things up at Nafe. The conference had a level of energy I’ve rarely experienced. It was great!
Speaking of success, pack some books when you head off for vacation.
Pick up some ideas in my summer reading recommendations in this issue’s Spotlight. No snoozers. I promise.
Don’t forget to visit our What’s New! section below. Get advice from our experts on everything from staying warm in a “freezing” office to switching careers to getting a business loan.

Summer Reading
|
| |
|
Happily those lazy, hazy days of summer are almost upon us. It's time to rest, relax and rejuvenate. Time for days spent at the beach, by a pool or, one of my favorites, lazing in a hammock.
Everyone knows that career often takes a backseat to fun in the summer. But, don't neglect yours completely. Before you leave for vacation, spend a little time shopping for books to take along. It never hurts to have that competative edge.
Here are my summer reading recommendations. No snoozers made it to this list. (You know the ones that have great information but are dry as dust.) Each one is an engaging read that will entertain and inform you. I promise.
- Feel the Fear and Do It Anyway, by Susan Jeffers, can help you move past the fears that are stopping you from achieving your goals. A quick and informative read, filled with real-life examples of how Jeffers and others have managed to conquer their fears and realize their dreams.
- How to Work a Room, The Ultimate Guide to Savvy Socializing In Person and Online, by Susan RoAne, explains how to make the most of every event. With wit and humor, RoAne takes you step-by-step through the networking process from facing your fears to preparing small talk to developing relationships.
- Make a Name for Yourself, 8 Steps Every Woman Needs to Create a Personal Brand Strategy for Success, by Robin Fisher Roffer, is one of my favorites. Roffer uses easily recognizable examples like Oprah and Madonna to explain the concept of having a personal brand. She then explains how to market brand you. (Now in paperback)
- Soul Proprietor, 101 Lessons from a Lifestyle Entrepreneur, by Jane Pollak, is a gem. It's like sitting with a mentor who's willing to share her success stories and her learning experiences. You know, the ones that didn't quite turn out as planned. Fun and inspirational, a great read for every businesswoman.
- Type Talk: The 16 Personality Types That Determine How We Live, Love and Work, by Otto Kroeger and Janet M. Thusen, is one of the best books about Type theory on the market. Warm and witty, this book is great for anyone who wants to better understand themselves and the people they work with.
- Who Moved My Cheese? An A-Mazing Way to Deal with Change in Your Work and in Your Life, by Spencer Johnson, MD, is a simple parable that provides some unique insights into the truth about change. An entertaining read, that will help you cope with change in every area of your life.

Highlights from the Nafe Conference
By Annette Richmond
Several weeks ago, I attended Nafe’s 30 Years of Women@Work Conference in New York City. For two days I had the opportunity to mix and mingle with amazing women from across the country. One contingent traveled
to New York all the way from Hawaii.
Like many conferences, Women@Work was filled with workshops and networking opportunities. Keynote speakers, like Pat Mitchell, president & CEO of PBS, gave advice and provided inspiration. What bowled me over about this conference was the level of energy.
Seven hundred women working together created a powerhouse of energy. Forget the Energizer Bunny®. Women are the ones who just keep on going.

The power of public speaking By Joanna Parfitt
Back in 1996 I joined a professional women's networking group in Stavanger, Norway. The group was called WIN, which stood for Women's International Network. This was the first professional club that I had ever joined and I was very nervous, particularly at the first meeting when I didn't know a soul.
Today, five years later, I have to admit that I owe everything I have become today to WIN. Not only were there monthly meetings with a motivational speaker, but there was a sub-group for WIN members to join. There was no fee, and members met informally in each other's homes once a month. I joined the group that called itself 'Presenters'.
