Happy May! The weather has finally warmed up here in the Northeast. Summer flowers are beginning to poke their heads out of the ground. Cinco de Mayo this week reminds me that warmer weather is right around the corner and, as a bonus, brings another day to celebrate. What are you celebrating in your life? Make sure you acknowledge every step you make towards reaching your goal.

This issue brings Are You A Good Juggler? How to balance work, family and friends (Part 2). Our panel of six experts offer their take on why work/life “balance” is so elusive. They also discuss why doing one thing differently can change your life. I think you’ll find their comments as thought-provoking as I did.

Finally, the results of our Fashion Poll – Are you a Fashionista or Recessionista? – are in. Of respondents 27.27% said Fashionista, 18.18% said Recessionista and a whopping 54.55% said “Depends on how much I like it.” Perhaps their responses reflect an improving economy.

How’s your juggling act? Are you successfully balancing your professional and personal lives? Or is your career invading every aspect of your life.

In the 24/7 world we live setting boundaries can seem impossible. Last month, I contacted several work/life balance professionals to get some guidance on setting those boundaries. What I got was enough information for two articles.

Their responses featured in Are You A Good Juggler (Part 1) focused on the stress of juggling work, family and friends and the difficulties of disconnecting from our professional lives. How to communication more effectively and avoid misunderstandings

Communication is a lot like humor. While I may think a joke is funny, you may not. The most successful comedians have learned what will make most of the people laugh. A lot of that has to do with "frame of reference."

And that same "frame of reference" can lead to a distortion in communication. For example, we all have different ideas of the perfect holiday: some reminisce about their large-extended family gathered around the dinner table, others do not. These "different meanings" are why one partner’s ideas of what makes a perfect holiday may be different from the others.

An area where this often causes problems is "casual attire." Some people think this means a pair of slacks and a sweater, while others picture a dressy T-shirt and jeans. These "different meanings" may be caused by what they’ve read, what they’ve heard or where they’ve worked previously. The result is that "casual attire" becomes unclear communication. While this instance can be easily remedied with a written dress code, other misinterpretations can be more problematic.

How to relieve stress on the job

You've just gotten off the telephone with an irate customer, and now you're tense. Your neck aches and your back is getting stiff. What do you do to relieve the pressure? One natural remedy, that doesn't have any calories, is yoga.

The recent popularity of yoga attests to the fact that many people are now realizing its many benefits, both physical and mental. Yoga is practiced in a variety of formats, or paths, the most well known being hatha yoga. Thankfully, you don't need to be a guru or incredibly flexible to practice yoga. You can start today with these simple stretches that you can do at work that make a vast difference in your productivity and sense of well being.

These stretches take only a few moments, and most can be done while you're still sitting at your desk or computer. If you have a chair with rollers on it, you may want to move to a chair that is more stable before you begin the stretches. You don't want to slip and slide across your office floor while you're doing a stretch! When doing yoga stretches, stretch only until you feel a comfortable stretching sensation. Don't overdo it! Take it slow and easy, and the increased flexibility will come naturally over time.
