Editor's Notes

Greetings! I’m so excited that summer is almost here. Besides great weather, summer brings one of the best networking times of the year. From graduations to weddings to summer barbecues, this is a great time to meet new people and reconnect with old friends. Make sure to plan ahead so you can make the most of your opportunities.

Generally, the summer season kicks off with college graduations. You never know who you’ll meet at a graduation party – particularly if it’s not yours. Dress to impress and always carry a few business cards. Just in case someone asks for one.

With college grads in mind, our lead article is my interview with Emily Bennington coauthor of Effective Immediately: How to Fit In, Stand Out, and Move Up at Your First Real Job. Her concrete advice will make the first few months in your first full-time job more enjoyable and productive. You'll have a much better chance of standing out in a good way. If you know someone who is graduating consider passing this on to him or her.

I’m excited to be headed to the Annual SHRM Conference next month in Las Vegas. If you’re going to be attending contact me. Maybe we can get together in real life – or as they on Twitter IRL

Please help us to grow by forwarding this newsletter. For more career advice, don’t forget to follow me on Twitter and like us on Facebook! I read several career-related articles from outlets like Fortune and the Wall Street Journal online every day and post the most relevant ones to Facebook and Twitter.

Looks like most of you don’t think the job market is improving. So far the majority of responses to our current poll have been negative. Sixty percent say the job market is not improving. Please take a minute to weigh in when you visit the website. I’ll share the results in an upcoming newsletter.

Thanks again for your continued interest in career-intelligence.com. I hope you'll enjoy this issue as much as we enjoyed putting it together. As always, please contact me directly at arichmond@career-intelligence.com with any thoughts, comments or suggestions.

It's your life, make the most of it :)

How to succeed in your first full-time job

By Annette Richmond

College is over. Now it’s time to get down to the business of work. You may have participated in an internship program or two while you were in school. But your first full-time job is different than a three-month position as an intern.

Being successful in any new job isn’t easy. The first day can be downright scary. However, seasoned professionals have their past experience to draw on. When it’s your first full-time position it’s a lot different.

Obviously, you want to do well. You want to prove yourself to your new employer. And get along with your colleagues as well.

It’s a dilemma. But, help is here. With the goal of helping you navigate your first position, I contacted Emily Bennington, coauthor of Effective Immediately: How to Fit In, Stand Out, and Move Up at Your First Real Job and founder of Professional Studio 365 which provides onboarding services for new grads and their employers. She also is a contributing writer for Monster.com and a featured blogger for The Huffington Post.

Happily when I asked for an interview she graciously agreed to share her expertise.

What to do now that you’ve graduated

By Carole Martim

Congratulations on attaining your degree! It’s a special time and a proud accomplishment. You did it! You’re finished! With school that is. Now it’s time to do some learning about the survival techniques in the “World of Work” in a competitive environment. Are you ready to take the next steps?

Hopefully you have a good resume prepared, if not, that will be your first priority! Need help? Many colleges have career centers that are willing to help you with your resume, but if you don’t have that option try the "resume help" of the top job search engines or find a resume expert on Linkedin or Facebook. The aim of this resume is to create enough interest to garner you an invite for a job interview.

Start by doing research on job postings and companies that may interest you. There are several good job search websites available to assist you in your search and they may give you ideas on places to connect with people in your field of interest. Once your resume is polished the next challenge of course will be getting that resume out to the right people. This may require some new techniques and will become your new "job search homework assignment". Find the sites that interest you and submit or post your resume there.
