Editor's Notes

Happy Summer! Almost. Here in the States, Memorial Day marks the unofficial start to Summer. Graduations, barbecues and local parades are a great place to meet new people and get reacquainted with old friends. Strike up a conversation with the neighbors you haven't seen all winter, you never know where being friendly can lead.

Rising mercury means change is in the air. Now is a good time to consider changing your life. If you're in the job-search process or lucky enough to have landed an offer make sure you know what you're REALLY looking for (Multiple Offers? So What's Your Problem?) Because moving to a new job is about a lot more than increasing your salary.

Changing your seasonal wardrobe also is a good time to tweak your image. Spend one weekend evaluating your current wardrobe (Is Your Closet Ready for the New Season?). Subtly replacing and updating a few items can help you move to the next level in your career. Try to emulate the successful women in your office.

Be sure to visit our What's New section below to for some advice on reducing stress at the office (Stress Busters At Work). Speaking of less stress, it's time to start planning ways to enjoy extra down time this Summer (Mix Business With Pleasure). And don't miss the all new answers from our career-management experts.

And thanks for your continued support, please help us continue to grow by forwarding The Career Intelligencer to your friends and colleagues.

See you next month!

It's your life, make the most of it :)

How to Win Friends & Influence People

Likeability Goes A Long Way

While some self-help books get old others become classics. Originally published in 1936, How to Win Friends & Influence People by Dale Carnegie is one of the classics.

Despite nearly seventy years on the market, How to Win Friends & Influence People is packed with timely messages. Carnegie begins by covering two things that are important to all of us: 1) how to get people to like us and 2) how to get them to do what we want. He concludes with an essential: How to change people without offending them. Hint: Being nice goes a long way.

Using real-life examples to illustrate his points, Carnegie offers 22 principals that you can use to get better results in every part of your life. My favorite section is Six Ways to Make People Like You, which includes chapters on how to be considered a great conversationalist, why it’s important to remember people’s names and how something as simple as a smile can change your life. (Make an effort to greet people with a smile for a week and see what happens.)

Always practical, often humorous, How to Win Friends & Influence People already is one of my favorites. A book destined to be thumbed through and reread often. Because it’s filled with simple truths which will never go out of style.

5 Steps to help you change seasons

By Diana Pemberton Sikes

If you've been to the stores any time in the last few weeks, you've probably seen all the new season merchandise. If the vast array has you tempted to pull out your credit card and take home some goodies, let me tell you that your timing instincts are right: for even if the weather isn't cooperating where you're at, the selection in the stores will never be better than it is right now.

So if you live in a small town and/or if you wear an average size, grab while the getting's good. Otherwise, when you're ready to shop, you'll have to settle for what's left.

But how do you know what you need? Read More
