Editor's Notes

Happy Thanksgiving!!! If you're here in the states you're getting ready for my favorite food fest which serves as a kickoff to the holiday season. Change is coming with our new president-elect. Unfortunately, we are still in the throws of an economic crisis.

Despite the fast approaching holiday season, things are not so merry and bright. In line with our economy this month's newsletter focuses on Dealing with Difficult Times. Right now many people are out of work. Whether you've been laid off or fired it's often difficult to explain your situation during the interview process. With this in mind the lead article provides advice on how to handle interviews if you've lost your job. In this issue you'll also find tips on making the most of your fashion dollars and how to be more productive.

Finding themselves out of work prompts some people to start their own businesses. Whether it's a way to make a living or make some extra money on the side running a successful business isn't easy. Before you make any decisions make sure you know the five essentials to starting a business.

Also, I'd like to tell you about a new function on career-intelligence.com. To make the website more user-friendly we've added the ability to search for topics within career-intelligence.com. You'll find boxes marked Search on the top section of each page. We hope that this will make it easier for you to find what you're looking for when you visit us.

Following are the results from our Job Security Poll. Sadly, most respondents do not feel that their jobs are very secure:

35.29% - Feel comfortable that their job is secure
23.53% - Feel uncertain
41.18% - Feel that they really need to find another job.

When you visit the website, take a moment to answer our Holiday Poll. If you're here in the states, enjoy your Thanksgiving holiday.

Thanks again for your continued interest in career-intelligence.com. I hope you'll enjoy this issue as much as we enjoyed putting it together. As always, please contact me directly at arichmond@career-intelligence.com with any thoughts, comments or suggestions.

It's your life, make the most of it :)

How to explain your situation to the interviewer

By Judi Perkins

So you were fired? Now what? How will you explain it when you interview?

There are many questions that plague job seekers. "What salary are you looking for?" is a big one. "Why should we hire you?" is another. And "Why did you leave your last job?" can leave you spluttering if you were fired and don't know how to answer.

And most people don't! After they've stumbled through a few answers—trying in vain to phrase it in an acceptable way—and are not invited back for a second interview, their fears are confirmed. No one will hire them because they've been fired. Read More

Dressing well on a budget

By Scarlett De Bease

I know you do not need any reminding about the current financial situation in our country, or how it affects all of us in one way or another. Despite that, it is still extremely important to put your best ‘look’ forward, and it is even more important during these difficult times. Whether working hard to keep your current job, interviewing for a new position, or just wanting t o keep your spirits high, looking and feeling your best is still possible without having to spend tons of money.

First, determine which items you need to complement and update your current wardrobe. Perhaps there are a few pieces that you do need to splurge on, but the majority of what you will purchase can be bought on a tight budget. Here are some suggestions on how to dress fashionably while saving money. Read more

What you need to get your business off the ground

By Barbara Bartlein

The economy may be tanking but new research from Barclays suggests that entrepreneurs are far from being discouraged by reports of an economic slowdown. They report an estimated 98,000 new start-ups formed in the first three months of 2008, which is the highest number of start-ups in the last three quarters. According to statistics, the most popular industries for start-ups were business and financial services, construction and the retail sector. As John Davis, Marketing Director for Local Business at Barclays said, “…there is a feeling there is never a bad time to start a good business.”

Now there is a new group in Milwaukee helping entrepreneurs do exactly that. BizStarts Milwaukee launched last month with the resources, networking and know how to help create a vibrant, innovative and prosperous entrepreneurial business climate. The goal of BizStarts is to create an infrastructure designed to nurture and grow innovative, fast-track companies. The organization provides access to capital, mentoring, assistance in writing business plans and other resources any good entrepreneur would need to be successful. Read More

Be a Productivity Role Model By Laura Stack — Have you ever taken an honest look at how you are perceived around the office? Your behavior, attitude, and reputation play a huge role in how you interact with coworkers and subordinates. Others may listen to you because of your job title, but if that's the only reason, you have a serious problem on your hands. Read More

The Return Of The Suit By Diana Pemberton Sikes — Well, it's official: the business suit, pushed to the back of the closet during the dot com era, is now back in a big way. Suits instantly establish authority, setting the tone for serious business like no other apparel can. This traditional uniform is giving wearers an advantage in this uncertain economy, allowing them to "one up" their competitors who have remained in casual mode. If you're looking to stand out from the crowd, a suit might benefit you as well. Read More
