Editor's Notes

Welcome to the November issue of The Career Intelligencer. Thanks to all our returning readers and a warm welcome to our many new subscribers.

With the holiday season fast approaching, I thought that this was a perfect opportunity to take some time to celebrate our diversity. For me, every year brings (mostly) fond memories of Christmas past. When I was a kid, we used to gather at my grandfather's house on Christmas Eve. Although, he was Romanian Orthodox (which meant he would officially celebrate Christmas a couple of weeks later) he always made December 24th special for us grandkids.

How do you celebrate during the holiday season? Share your story to enter this month's movie contest. The more we know about each other, the more tolerant we will be everywhere.

I hope you enjoy our new section: Spotlight. In each issue we'll include brief book or movie review. If you have any suggestions for this category, please send them my way. In December, we'll pump-up our publishing schedule and start delivering The Career Intelligencer twice a month.

Please feel free to email your suggestions to arichmond@career-intelligence.com. Let me know what you want to see here and we'll try to bring it to you.

Happy Thanksgiving!

Annette Richmond

Spotlight

Make Your Own Kind of Music

Have you ever felt that things were so bad; they really couldn't get much worse? Even if we'd rather not admit it, most of us have been there. Sometimes more than once. Well next time you have one of those days, or weeks renew yourself with Music of the Heart.

If you haven't seen this movie, I'm not surprised. But, it's too bad because you have missed a gem. Based on a documentary, the film tells the story of a woman who manages to get her life back and achieve a lifelong dream. Along the way, she happens to change the lives of many of her students as well.

Music of the Heart celebrates the human spirit's triumph over adversity, tragedy and ignorance. Perhaps because it is a true story, our heroine is a three-dimensional woman who falls down often. She just manages to get up more. The sometimes-remarkable students are portrayed as honest and captivating and not always loveable.

Led by Meryl Streep, this first-rate cast is rounded-out by Angela Bassett and Gloria Estefan in what I believe is her first movie role. If you need a lift or a little inspiration take a break with Music of the Heart. I think it will surprise you.

Holiday Stress Busters

Holiday Stress Busters
Keeping the joy in your holiday season.

Personally, I love the holiday season. Mainly because most people are just a little bit nicer. But besides that, I enjoy the festivities: the family gatherings, the holiday parties and watching It's a Wonderful Life. Unfortunately, the holiday season also brings a big dose of holiday stress.

With this in mind, we asked stress-management consultant Frances Lylan Wolff to offer her advice for handling three holiday scenarios. Read article.

Starting in December, Frances will be available to answer your questions on career-intelligence.com. See Ask the Expert on our Home page

After the Baby, Getting Your Professional Image Back - Ask the Expert

I've recently returned to work after maternity leave. None of my pre-pregnancy clothes fit me, but I don't want to wear my maternity clothes. Are there a few pieces that I can mix and match to put together a business wardrobe and still keep the costs down? Can you give me some ideas?

Thanks,
Amy

Can you relate to this dilemma? Read what our Image expert, Sherry Maysonave has to say.
