Editor's Notes

Greetings! As I write these notes, flu season is in full swing. Be sure you spend some extra time taking care of you. Remember the better you take care of yourself the better you'll be able to take care of everything else. That means your kids, your partner and even your job.

For this reason, this issue focuses on Reducing Stress. If you're among the multitude who hates their job, take comfort in knowing that you are not alone. A recent study by The Conference Board indicates that Job Satisfaction has hit an all time low (Unhappy At Work?). So give yourself ten guilt-free minutes a day to think about how much you hate your job. On really bad days complain to a friend. Then get moving. Update your resume, assess your skills and start planning for when the economy improves. (You'll find help in our Assessment and Transition sections.)

To reduce stress further, spend some time this weekend de-cluttering your home. Get started with a great piece of advice from nationally known organizers Barbara Hemphill and Maggie Bedrosian (The Love It Or Lose It Principle). Finally, pick up some tips on avoiding stress in the workplace from Barbara Bartlein author of the new book Why Did I Marry You Anyway? (Desk Rage is More Common in the Workplace).

Please take a minute to let us know if you prefer working for a man or a woman. You'll find the poll on the bottom of our Home Page.

Have a suggestion? Please send your comments to me at arichmond@career-intelligence.com.

And, if you know anyone else who'd enjoy reading The Career Intelligencer, please help us grow by passing it along.

See you next month!

It's your life, make the most of it :)

Dealing with Sexual Harassment

When we first started career-intelligence.com, I wanted to include information on recognizing and dealing with sexual harassment because it didn't seem readily available elsewhere. I never imagined how busy that section would be. Before starting this company, I had no idea how prevalent sexual harassment is in our workplace.

Nearly, 65% of our Sexual Harrassment poll respondents said they had experienced sexual harassment on the job. Only 4% responded no. The rest were unsure. For all of these reasons, I decided to Spotlight two books I've read on the subject.

One is The 9 to 5 Guide to Combating Sexual Harassment by Ellen Bravo and Ellen Cassedy. Produced by the National Organization for Women, this book will help you understand what sexual harassment is, what it is not and what you can do about it. In addition to providing information on what the law says, this guide is filled with the experiences of women across the country. One of the most powerful chapters is Effects of Sexual Harassment, where women from all walks of life share their stories.

The other is Sexual Harassment, A practical guide to the law, your rights, and your options for taking action, by Tracy O'Shea and Jane LaLonde. Like the 9 to 5 guide, this book also includes basic information on sexual harassment laws. However, since Sexual Harassment evolved from the authors' experiences, it has a more personal tone. Throughout the book each woman shares how the harassment affected her, why she took legal action and how she was able to move on.

Both of these books are interesting reads, packed with information. Both will help you understand what sexual harassment is under the law. Both will help you through the legal process. But, if you want to be really informed I recommend reading them both.

Conference Board survey says you're not alone

By Annette Richmond, MA

If you're unhappy in your current position you're not alone. Job satisfaction in the U.S. has hit a record low, according to a recent Executive Action Report from The Conference Board, a New York City-based non-profit which creates and disseminates knowledge about management and the marketplace.

While discontent was spread across all age brackets, incomes and regions, The Conference Board noted the biggest decline in overall job satisfaction in respondents aged 35 to 44 (from 60.9 percent in 1995 to 47.2 percent in June 2003). The lowest job satisfaction was reported among workers aged 45 to 54 with only 46 percent indicating that they were happy with their jobs. While 54 percent of participants 65 and over said they were satisfied.

One Simple Key to Living Clutter-Free Forever

By Barbara Hemphill & Maggie Bedrosian

You've tried a hundred times to get rid of clutter and prevent the boomerang effect of clutter comeback. It wasn't long ago that you spent an entire weekend "decluttering" - and now you are expecting guests in two days, and the guestroom is full of "stuff" again! According to a study by the U.S. Department of Energy, 25% of people with two-car garages didn't park any cars in them and 32% parked only one. When it came to three-car garages, only 13% parked three cars. You probably don't have to think very hard to figure out that most of them are filled with clutter instead of cars! If you're looking for a solution that is simple and sustainable, you're not alone!

Whether you have fifteen people coming to a family dinner this weekend, or you are in a long-term project of preparing to sell your house for maximum value, whether you need to produce immediate results, or patiently recognize that you are wrestling with more complex issues, here's a bedrock principle that has helped thousands of people and may help you too. This principle can help you triumph over the clutter in your home, your workplace, or your heart.

Additional Articles New!Desk Rage is More Common in the Workplace by Barbara Bartlein, R.N., M.S.W.

As any human resource executive can tell you, frustration and office temper tantrums by employees are not unusual, but two new studies indicate that incivilities in the workplace appear to be increasing. Termed "desk rage," by one survey, it includes arguments between employees, pen throwing managers and workers kicking expensive computer equipment in fits of aggravation. Read More
