Editor's Notes

Happy Fall! Even though the leaves aren't changing yet according to the calendar Fall has officially arrived. Vacations are over and most associations have resumed their monthly meetings.

Even if you're currently employed, I hope that you have stepped up your networking efforts. Fall means it's time to get back to business again. With this in mind, this issue focuses on Marketing You.

If you've been out of work for awhile, it's easy to become discouraged. One way to keep yourself motivated and ready for interviews is to find ways to enhance your marketability (How to Stay Marketable When You're Out of Work). When you're out of work it's also easy to neglect your image. Don't. Whether you're employed or not try to update your wardrobe with a few new pieces (Best Buys For Fall 2004).

As I mentioned Fall is a great time to expand your contacts. But, before you head out to your next networking event take a look at this month's Spotlight: Nonstop Networking, How to Improve Your Life, Luck and Career by Andrea Nierenberg. I've read several books on networking and this is one of the best. It not only teaches you how to meet people, it gives you a ton of great ways to stay in touch.

Thanks so much for responding to our Presidential Election Poll. Thirty-six percent of you said you were planning to watch both conventions, 26 percent planned to watch the Democrats and 11 percent watched the Republicans. Unfortunately, 27 percent of respondents didn't plan to watch either convention.

Please remember that women can be a powerful voice in this year's election. Be informed. Vote. In the meantime, please take a moment to answer our final Election 2004 Poll: Who are you planning to vote for?

And thanks for your continued support, please help us continue to grow by forwarding The Career Intelligencer to your friends and colleagues.

See you next month!

It's your life, make the most of it :)

Annette Richmond

Nonstop Networking, How To Improve Your Life, Luck and Career

Luck Is What You Make It

Since launching career-intelligence.com, I’ve focused a lot of attention on networking. That’s because developing mutually beneficial relationships is the single most effective way to meet your personal and professional goals.

Nearly everyone knows it’s important to network. But, many of us are not comfortable meeting new people. Even if we are great at “working the room” we may fall flat when it comes to following up.

Well, I have a fast-reading, informative, little gem that can teach you every step of the networking process: Nonstop Networking, How To Improve Your Life, Luck and Career by Andrea R. Nierenberg.

Nonstop Networking covers every aspect of the networking process from meeting people to getting to know them to keeping in touch with those near and far. While learning basic networking techniques is important, Andrea goes beyond the fundamentals. She explains different communication styles and describes the type of people you need in your network. And because, as Andrea says, “we are all shy in some situations” there’s a special section for Introverts.

I can’t take credit for finding Nonstop Networking; I met Andrea two years ago at a weeklong training. We hit it off and have kept in touch by phone and email. Over the years she’s been a valuable resource and I was delighted to learn that she was writing this book.

Over the past few years, I’ve grown a great deal personally and professionally, primarily through networking. But, developing relationships isn’t always easy. That’s why I found Andrea’s systems for keeping your network alive and organizing your contacts particularly valuable.

Nonstop Networking is filled with practical advice and entertaining anecdotes delivered in Andrea’s warm, gracious style. Whatever your expertise, Nonstop Networking can take you to the next level. I know it taught me a thing or two.

Enhance your marketability when you're unemployed or returning to the workforce

By Annemarie Cross, CPRW, CRW, CEIP, CCM, CECC

Involuntary career breaks, or dare we say it, 'unemployment', can often be a frightening situation for anyone to be in. After the initial shock of unexpectedly finding yourself without a job, it doesn't take long before disillusionment sets in, particularly when days turn into weeks, then weeks into months or even longer, and you begin to panic: how you are going to handle the ever-increasing employment gap on your resume?

The belief that the longer you are out of work, the more difficult it will be to regain employment is understandable. However, it is important to stress that many people at one time or another have found themselves jobless whether through their own doing (such as taking a career break to raise children or scheduling a well-deserved holiday), or in situations that have been beyond their control such as with layoffs, redundancies or company closures. Read this before you head to the mall

By Diana Pemberton-Sikes

Love all the cool clothes you're seeing in the malls, online, and in the catalogs being delivered to your doorstep? There are lots and lots of pretty things being shown for this season, that's for sure.

But if you're trying to figure out where best to spend your money, let me say that it's NOT on all the "must haves" that will be out of date by New Year's. Yes, there are some cute trends out there and yes, you may find them hard to resist. Read More
