Editor's Notes

Well here we are in September. An early Labor Day signaled an earlier Fall. Although it's still "technically" Summer, most people are in a "back to business" state of mind.

If you're out of work or just looking for a change, the good news is that this is one of the best times to look for a job. Packed with vacations and holidays Summer is notoriously slow. Hiring begins again in the fall.

With this in mind this edition focuses on Getting a New Job. In this issue you'll find advice on salary negotiation from our interview expert Carole Martin, two articles on resume writing, one from our expert Annemarie Cross, and tips, from me, on getting out to that networking dinner when you'd rather go home. You'll also find some great suggestions on how to get rid of your relics and get your closet ready for fall.

Don't miss, the What's New section below, for some interesting information on the emergence of Net Gen generations in the workforce. I found the comparison with the Boomers quite interesting.

When you visit the website, take a moment to answer our Convention Poll. Don't worry, we're not asking you about your political affiliation. I confess to watching most of both conventions myself. I'll give you the results in our next newsletter. By then we'll be less than a month away from the election. If you haven't already please register to vote.

Thanks again for your continued interest in career-intelligence.com. I hope you'll enjoy this issue as much as we enjoyed putting it together. As always, please contact me directly at arichmond@career-intelligence.com with any thoughts, comments or suggestions.

It's your life, make the most of it :)

Make Sure You Are the Winner At Your Next Job Interview

By Carole Martin

One step forward; one step back; step together, and back again.

To perform the job interview salary negotiation dance steps, you must have a good sense of balance. Knowing your value and your worth will help you feel more confident about staying in step during the salary negotiation process. The employer takes the lead and you follow, staying with the rhythm. You move together through the interview process; aware of the other, taking care not to step on one another. The salary negotiation dance is never confrontational or harsh, but smooth and in harmony. How to have a closet filled with clothes you can wear

By Scarlett De Bease

I know it is hard to believe that it is already the end of summer, but as you have most probably noticed, the days are shorter and the nights are, thankfully, cooler. The time has come to put away our Capri’s and sandals, and get our wardrobes ready for the cooler weather of fall and winter.

Before you go shopping for the clothes and accessories to complement and expand your existing wardrobe, follow the guidelines below to make room for your new wardrobe purchases, and you will discover the possibilities that await you with what you already own.

In anticipation of many women saying that they have nothing to wear, even though their closets and drawers are overflowing, here are eight steps to take to have a closet always filled with ‘something to wear’. Read More

Emerging Workforce Has Different Priorities By Barbara Bartlein — The new workforce of Gen X’s, Gen Y’s and Millenniums have different priorities than the Baby Boomers or the Aging population that came before them. But before you complain that they don’t have a good “work ethic” or a “loyalty to the company,” it is helpful to look at some of the characteristics of Boomers and this group. Read More

How To Network When You'd Rather Stay Home By Annette Richmond — It's Wednesday at 5:30 p.m. You were late for work, again, because of the stupid traffic. You missed lunch because you were on the phone with an upset client. And you already have the feeling that tomorrow's meeting with your boss isn't going to go well. Read More

Creating An InTransition Resume By Annemarie Cross —Involuntary career breaks, or dare we say it, "unemployment", can often be a frightening situation for anyone to be in. After the initial shock of unexpectedly finding yourself without a job, it doesn't take long before disillusionment sets in, particularly when days turn into weeks, then weeks into months or even longer, and you begin to panic: How you are going to handle the ever-increasing employment gap on your resume?
