Editor's Notes

My heart is heavy as I write this note. Given our close proximity to New York City, my husband and I have been very lucky. Although, we have many friends who live and/or work in the City, none of them were injured in this terrible event. I hope that you and your families are safe as well.

Our thoughts and prayers go out to all who have been touched by this tragedy. In the sprit of returning to normalcy, we have decided to publish our September 15th issue. However, I would like to note that the US Department of Health & Human Services has information on how to discuss these terrible events with your children.

Whether you are looking for a new job, planning your career or running your own business, we have some ideas for you. The job-interview is one of the most nerve-racking parts of any job search. We have some tips to help you get through in Rehearsing the Interview, Eight answers you need to know. If you’re reentering the workforce, wondering how to choose a career or trying to move your part-time business to a full-time endeavor you’ll find advice from our experts in the What’s New section below.

Our Work/Life Contest continues through the month of September. The winner will win his or her choice of either the Strong Interest Inventory (Basic Profile) or the TKI report. To enter, tell us how you balance or blend your personal and professional lives. (See Contest below) And, yes, prizes are transferable, so your mother, brother, sister, husband can take the assessment instead of you.

As I’ve mentioned, some areas of career-intelligence.com are now Member’s Only. While membership is Free, you will have to join if you want to continue full-access to the site. (Please be patient while we are going through this transition.)

Please feel free to send your comments or suggestions to me at arichmond@career-intelligence.com. Let me know what you want to see here and I'll try to bring it to you. And, if you know anyone else who'd enjoy reading The Career Intelligencer, please pass it along.

When we first started career-intelligence.com, I wanted to include information on recognizing and dealing with sexual harassment because it didn't seem readily available elsewhere. I never imagined how busy that section would be. Before starting this company, I had no idea how prevalent sexual harassment is in our workplace.

Nearly, 65% of our September poll's respondents say they have experienced sexual harassment on the job. Only 4% have responded no. The rest are unsure. For all of these reasons, I decided to Spotlight two books I've read on the subject.

One is The 9 to 5 Guide to Combating Sexual Harassment by Ellen Bravo and Ellen Cassedy. Produced by the National Organization for Women, this book will help you understand what sexual harassment is, what it is not and what you can do about it. In addition to providing information on what the law says, this guide is filled with the experiences of women across the country. One of the most powerful chapters is Effects of Sexual Harassment, where women from all walks of life share their stories.

The other is Sexual Harassment, A practical guide to the law, your rights, and your options for taking action, by Tracy O'Shea and Jane LaLonde. Like the 9 to 5 guide, this book also includes basic information on sexual harassment laws. However, since Sexual Harassment evolved from the authors' experiences, it has a more personal tone. Throughout the book each woman shares how the harassment affected her, why she took legal action and how she was able to move on.

Both of these books are interesting reads, packed with information. Both will help you understand what sexual harassment is under the law. Both will help you through the legal process. But, if you want to be really informed I recommend reading them both.

Eight answers you need to know

By Annette Richmond

Congratulations! Your cover letter and resume took you through the first stage. Now you're getting ready for the next phase: the interview. A job interview is your chance to sell yourself to the employer. And, as with most things, planning ahead will help you make the most of the opportunity.

Don't let the interviewer's friendly demeanor lull you into a false sense of security. An interview is not a social situation. The employer is evaluating what you know, what you've done and how you present yourself. The process also is designed to help her figure out if you will fit into the company's culture.

While each interview will have different aspects, a few questions seem to pop up in nearly every situation. By preparing for these questions, and trying to anticipate any others particular to the job or industry, you will be ready to show the employer why you are the best person for the job. A WAHMPRENEUR Feature

By Dawn Rivers Baker

Merchandising on the Internet is still stumbling along, developing at a slower pace than online marketing and still getting in the way of sales. In their efforts to move product, merchandisers are floundering around without stopping to consider either the medium or their potential customers. The result is a certain amount of unrealized potential and a lot of merchandisers who are not seeing the forest for the trees.

In general, according to a report by Forrester Research, there are two fundamental problems.

For starters, online merchants attempt to continually expand product offerings in search of the one-stop shopping experience for their users. In doing so, they operate under the assumption that, when it comes to their online catalogs, bigger is better. To make matters worse, merchandisers are not constrained by the same kind of space considerations that they would have to deal with offline. In a physical store, they would have to justify shelf space with sales numbers. From their point of view, the web offers them infinite amounts of merchandising real estate, which they can fill infinite varieties of product. Read more
