Welcome

Welcome to the second issue of The Career Intelligencer. This month, we're excited to offer you the option of reading the newsletter in plain text or HTML.

When I saw Erin Brockovich last summer, I was inspired. The movie made me realize, again, that no matter what today looks like, a great tomorrow can be just around the corner. When you put your mind to it. If you haven't seen it yet, do. Enter our contest for a chance to win your own copy.

Congratulations to Angela B. who won last month's Book of the Month contest. In this issue, we have advice on dressing for a job interview, writing a great business letter and, in line with our Balancing Work & Family contest, some advice from stress-management consultant Frances Lylan Wolff.

Please feel free to send me your suggestions. Let me know what you want to see here and we'll try to bring it to you.

Have a healthy month!

Put Your Best Self Forward

How to win over the employer with style

Congratulations, you got the job interview. You have your foot in the proverbial door. Now is your chance to impress them with you. Take a tip from the advertising industry: presentation is everything. When you walk in the door and shake the interviewer's hand the first thing you will be judged on is your appearance.

So, what exactly should you wear? To answer that question, I spoke with three professional image consultants from across the country: Sherry Maysonave, president and founder, Empowerment Enterprises and author of Casual Power: How to Power Up Your Nonverbal Communication and Dress Down for Success; Susan M. Fignar, principal, Image Works Wonders; and Adele Riepe, president and CEO, Image Solutions. And, after speaking with each, I discovered that there is no one-size-fits-all answer. Read more

Don't forget to keep yourself in the work + family equation

Frances Lylan WolffTired? Stressed? Feel like you need next years' vacation tomorrow? Stress-management consultant Frances Lylan Wolff offers some tips and techniques for reducing the effects of daily stressors.

CI: Most women's lives are a juggling act: trying to balance work with family responsibilities (kids, partners, pets). How can we reduce the stress that goes along with trying to do it all?

FLW: 1. Prioritize--don't try to do it all. It's not possible. 2. Plan - Literally schedule time into your day for what's important: husband, children, SELF. If you don't take time to restore yourself doing something that makes you feel good, you cannot do your best at your job or caring for your family. Exercise. Take a stress reduction course to learn new techniques for reducing stress. Schedule time for your hobby or to pamper yourself. Read more
