Reverse Chronological Resume
Research has shown that the reverse chronological resume format (last position first) is preferred overwhelmingly, by employers. This is the format for developing a reverse-chronological resume.
- Contact information: name, address, phone number and email address at the top of the page
- Objective: a concise, clear statement which describes the position you are looking for. Avoid listing job titles such as secretary or vice-president marketing. You may need to modify this when applying for different positions and/or industries.
- Experience*: start with your current employer and work backwards. Be detailed when describing your duties and responsibilities. Devote most space to recent positions. Summarize others unless they are particularly relevant.
- Education: List any degrees, professional trainings and certifications here. Include honors and GPA (3.5 or over) here.
- References: References on Request is fine. Employers will ask for references when you reach that stage of the interviewing process.
- Omit any personal information (unless your hobby is relavant).
*Recent college grads should list Education before Experience. If you have gone back to school and are changing careers, also list your education first.
