Remember the cover letter is a sales tool used to get you in the door for an interview. Be sure to carefully proofread before you send to a potential employer.

Dear Mr. or Ms:
In your initial paragraph state the reason for the letter and the specific position or type of work that you are applying for. Be sure to include where (placement center, newspaper, friend, employment service or Internet site) you learned of the opening.
In your second paragraph, indicate why you are the right person for the job. Describe your experience and qualifications to match the job requirements mentioned in the ad. Above all, include what you can do for the employer. A recent grad should explain how your academic background makes you a qualified candidate. Mention any experience (don't forget any volunteer work). Try not to repeat the exactly the same information the employer will find in the resume.
In the closing paragraph, indicate your desire for a personal interview. Mention your flexibility as to the time and place of the meeting. Include your phone number if it is not already in the letterhead. Finally, close your letter with a statement or question that will encourage a response.
Sincerely,
Your Name
