A resume is a tool you use to sell yourself to an employer. Here are a few tips to help create a winner.
- Keep your resume organized and detailed. A reverse-chronological is the format most preferred by employers.
- Start with a clear objective. If you are targeting more than one position or industry create a different resume for each.
- If you're a recent graduate (within the last few years) list education before experience. The opposite is true for those with longer work histories.
- Make sure to list any professional training and/or certifications. This is particularly important if you are working in a technology field.
- Be clear about your duties and responsibilities. Employers want detailed information about your most recent positions. Summarize others, unless they are particularly relevant to your present search.
- Show a progression. Try to demonstrate that your responsibilities have increased over the years.
- Don't be vague about dates. Include both the years and months you held each position: ex. 11/99 to Present.
- Try to keep resume to one page. Two is acceptable, anything longer is considered too long.
- Proofread the finished product. Proofread it again. Some employers will not consider candidates with typos and grammatical errors.
