Resume Tips

A resume is a tool you use to sell yourself to an employer. Here are a few tips to help create a winner.

  1. Keep your resume organized and detailed. A reverse-chronological is the format most preferred by employers.
  2. Start with a clear objective. If you are targeting more than one position or industry create a different resume for each.
  3. If you're a recent graduate (within the last few years) list education before experience. The opposite is true for those with longer work histories.
  4. Make sure to list any professional training and/or certifications. This is particularly important if you are working in a technology field.
  5. Be clear about your duties and responsibilities. Employers want detailed information about your most recent positions. Summarize others, unless they are particularly relevant to your present search.
  6. Show a progression. Try to demonstrate that your responsibilities have increased over the years.
  7. Don't be vague about dates. Include both the years and months you held each position: ex. 11/99 to Present.
  8. Try to keep resume to one page. Two is acceptable, anything longer is considered too long.
  9. Proofread the finished product. Proofread it again. Some employers will not consider candidates with typos and grammatical errors.
